Savina Gozo – Hand Made Maltese Heritage of Trade, Craft, and Good Taste
Savina is more than a fine food brand.
It is a continuation of a marketplace story that began in the heart of Gozo over a century ago.
The Origin — Pjazza Savina, Rabat
At the turn of the 20th century, Pjazza Savina in Rabat (Victoria), Gozo was the centre of everyday island life. Long before modern logistics and export routes connected Malta to the world, this square functioned as the commercial heartbeat of Gozo.
Farmers arrived with seasonal produce.
Fishermen brought their catch from the surrounding Mediterranean waters.
Artisans displayed lace, woven garments, tools, and handcrafted goods.
Cheeses, wines, preserves, grains, and oils moved through the market in a rhythm shaped by harvests and weather.
At the centre of this activity stood the offices of Magro Brothers, already respected provision merchants. Their location in Pjazza Savina placed them at the intersection of agriculture, trade, and community trust — a foundation that would shape the Savina identity for generations.

Gozo — The Island Behind the Brand
Savina’s identity cannot be separated from Gozo, Malta’s smaller sister island.
Gozo covers approximately 67 square kilometres and is home to just over 40,000 residents. Compared to the main island of Malta, Gozo is quieter, greener, and more rural. Terraced limestone fields, dry stone walls, small family farms, and coastal cliffs define its landscape.
Between Gozo and Malta lies Comino, a small island of only a handful of residents, surrounded by some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean. The channel between these islands shapes the local climate — warm sun, coastal breezes, and salt-laced air influencing agriculture and food traditions.
For centuries, island life required resilience and self-sufficiency. Preserving fruits, drying figs, curing olives, making cheeselets, producing honey, and preparing carob syrup were not luxury crafts — they were necessities. Over time, these necessities became refined culinary traditions.
Savina carries that heritage forward.
Four Generations of Magro Family Stewardship
From its roots in the early 1900s, the Magro family built a business grounded in:
-
Integrity in sourcing
-
Reliability in supply
-
Dedication to quality
-
A passion for authentic taste
Over four generations, Magro Brothers evolved into one of Malta’s leading food processing and provision enterprises. Today, the organization maintains commercial relationships in approximately fifty countries across four continents — yet the principles remain unchanged.
What began in a public square in Rabat has grown into structured international trade without losing its island foundation.
The Savina Identity
Savina products are dedicated to stimulating all five senses — taste, scent, sight, sound, and touch. Each jar, bottle, or gift set reflects:
-
The agricultural character of Gozo
-
The Mediterranean climate of the Maltese islands
-
The craftsmanship of small-batch island production
From honey and marmalades to olive oils, chutneys, antipasti, confectionery, and liqueurs, Savina expresses a distinct Maltese pantry tradition refined for modern presentation.
Luxury, in the Savina sense, is not excess.
It is care.
It is balance.
It is authenticity presented with elegance.
The Savina Artisan Centre — Xewkija, Gozo
Located in Xewkija, near the iconic Rotunda of St. John the Baptist, the Savina Artisan Centre allows visitors to witness island food production in motion.
Depending on the day’s schedule, guests may observe:
-
Cheeselets being shaped
-
Honey being prepared
-
Chutneys simmering
-
Jams being cooked
-
Olive oils being bottled
-
Sun-dried fruits being finished
Traditional crafts such as lace-making and candle-making are also part of the living cultural experience.
Visitors are invited not only to observe but to taste — sampling dairy products, preserves, sweets, and specialty items that locals and international guests alike associate with Gozo’s culinary identity.
The Artisan Centre embodies the Magro family’s original spirit: food, craft, and trade brought together under one roof.
